Other Characters: Sylvanas Windrunner, Rogue
Character Name: Catra | C'yra of D'riluth III
Series: Masters of the Universe
Age: Her age is not revealed, however she's clearly a young woman, and not at all an adolescent.
From When?: Post-canon, after a confrontation with She-Ra. Despite the Princess of Power's aversion to killing, she does enjoy throwing people large distances, and it is not always possible to land safely.
Inmate/Warden: Inmate. C'yra believes that the only person you can trust is yourself. Friends exist yes, but they're either planning the right moment to stab you in the back, or they're there to hide behind you, and are really a liability. Caring for people is just not something she chooses to do. Trust, friendship, love, she sees these things as weaknesses and doorways to being used. For her, life is about power and climbing to the top of the heap, through any means possible.
Abilities/Powers: C’yra is a skilled soldier, acting as Force Captain of the Evil Horde. She has a wealth of combat skills, including hand to hand (to a level that she felt confidant enough to take on Huntara, one of the best in the galaxy), long sword, whip, and blasters. She is also a near genius with mechanics. She can build complex, advanced machinery from scratch. (She once designed and built a transporter that could teleport people into different dimensions.) She can fly various space craft including jet-like ships, hover crafts, and other flying vehicles. And she has a clear aptitude for building mechanical traps and gadgets.
Her magical abilities mostly stem from the mask she wears, usually as a mantle, on her head. When she pulls it over her eyes, she transforms into a large black panther. In this form she is stronger and faster than her humanoid form. The mask has many other magical abilities, including the ability to encase targets in ice with a beam, using the command “Freezefire”. However, she no longer remembers that this power exists, thanks to the Magicats, nor is she aware of what else the mask can do.
She has been shown to be able to teleport short distances. Whether or not this is an ability of the mask, or a magical skill she learned on her own, is never revealed.
As of her arrival on the Barge, none of her magical abilities work.
Personality:
C’yra is a secretive person. She changed her name to be a more obvious moniker for herself, and to mask her past after joining up with the Horde. C’yra is a ruler, Catra is a survivor. Catra is the one who can survive in the conditions of life in the Despondos, a dark, evil dimension. She never refers to her home world, or her life before the Horde. If you look at the type of environment that exists around the Fright Zone, it makes perfect sense. The name of the army is the Evil Horde. The entire group is made up of evil people, out for all they can take.
The secrecy itself show cases just how intelligent she is. Catra is a near genius when it comes to mechanics, and is clearly well versed in battle tactics, spying, and other military strategies. But she knows not to be too obvious about how smart she is. Information is power, and Catra hoards power. She will take from anyone she can while giving back as little as possible. She shares next to nothing of herself, and sees everyone as potential threats, even her allies. This is not paranoia, because that is the mentality of the Horde. The strongest survive. The one with the most power lives well.
However, the Horde is not a group that gives advancement based solely on the merits of one’s obvious skills. Catra was only made Force Captain because Adora, Hordak’s adopted daughter, and his favorite, defected to the Rebellion, despite the fact that Adora showcased a moral softness and a refusal to be cruel and do what, in the Evil Horde, would be expected of the leader of the armies. Catra was clearly the best choice for the position, but Adora was given the spot because of favoritism. It was a lesson Catra never forgot.
Prior to Adora’s kidnapping, Catra held Hordak’s favor. He had taken control of the planet Etheria, and enslaved the majority of its population. One of these slaves was the Queen of the Magicats, a race of anthropomorphic cat people. He took the queen’s magical mask and gave it as a gift to Catra, which she has kept to this day. Powerful gifts are not given lightly by Hordak, and it is hinted throughout the series that the relationship is not wholly platonic. There’s no love lost between Catra and Hordak, but to lose her position of favor to a baby rankled with her pride. She was forever in hostile competition with the young princess, and only after Adora’s defection did she regain her full status as Hordak’s second.
Because of this, Catra has adopted the mentality that she must forever be the best at what she does, including the best at manipulation. She hates Hordak, but he is her source of authority and power, so she must obey him and keep him happy with her. Unless something better comes along. She has no qualms about betraying anyone, if it means raising herself up beyond them. She will gladly promise the world to those whom she needs, only to snatch it away again at the last moment. And as often as her plans have failed, thanks to outside interference of She-Ra, Catra has also had to learn to cover her tracks.
She will make anyone she can her patsy to escape trouble, even if the trouble is of her own making. And falling back on feminine wiles is not at all out of character for her. She’ll play the dumb female as it suits her, using the ruse to cover up her more than capable mind, and her less than loyal attitude. Indeed, seduction is an easy fall back for her, and often is what she leads with, when dealing with men. If a man is staring at her body, he’s not paying attention to the knife she’s about to plunge into his back. Literally and figuratively.
But as the saying goes, you are what you pretend to be, and appealing to Catra’s vanity is a sure-fire way to cloud her judgment. She delights in the male attention she seeks, and will indeed get very offended if someone should shun her in favor of another woman. It’s a blow to her pride and can easily drive her to anger, and then from anger to vengefulness.
On that point, Catra dislikes other women. They are competition, and she hates to lose. In the Fright Zone, she often disparages her fellow Horde member, especially the women. Not only does she have a bitter hatred for Adora, but she also has a rivalry with Scorpia. The reason for her intense hatred of other women comes from the fact that she has a rather high opinion of women. She sees smart, capable women all around her every day, and every last one of them wants to knock her off her lofty perch. Men, she can control, but women she must defeat.
Barge Reactions: Magical cosmic space prison boat? Okay, whatever. Her world is a crazy mix of science and sorcery. This is nothing. However! Floods and breaches are going to be something of a surprise. She’s not used to being altered against her will. The Rebellion doesn’t really go in for mental manipulations. As for the wacky cast of characters, this won’t so much as get a bat of a lash from her. The people of Eternia and Etheria are all over the place in appearance and abilities.
Path to Redemption:
Catra firmly believes that friends are liabilities, or liars. A strong, capable warden who is truly out for her best interest would have the best impact. Warden’s who’s deals are selfless or have yet to make a decision on a deal are even better, because it would absolutely highlight that the Warden is there to help her more than anything else. Gently guiding her into relationships of actual friendship are an absolute must for her to graduate.
Also, Catra has a tendency to compete with other strong women, and is easily made envious and jealous by them. Even if the other party had no intention of doing so in the first place. Catra would not respond kindly to a female warden in any way. This might be a good thing, or a bad thing depending on the direction the Warden takes. Catra would put herself against a female warden, being obstinant and hostile. A female warden can expect violence to happen aimed at them from Catra. And if the warden was physically superior to her, Catra would go after her warden’s friends.
Male wardens may or may not fair any better. Men in power over her is something she is long since accustomed to, and she has go-to behaviors as work arounds. She will attempt to seduce her way around a male warden, so someone who sees through such things easily would be best. Turning her down, in the long run, would establish trust.
No matter what, a warden needs to show her that power does not equal safety. And that is what Catra, ultimately, is trying to gain; safety and security. Friends are not liabilities and not everyone is out to take whatever they can from her. She does not have to get them before they get her.

Some history notes:
Despite Catra being listed as human as her species, she is clearly not. Catra’s back story is very limited before the actual cartoon timeline. What is known from the toyline is that she is from the Tri Solar System. Her home planet is D’riluth III, and she was a member of its royal family, as she is listed as a ‘disputed monarch”. Her people are likely a cat-hybrid race, as she has many cat features. Her nails, though human looking, are strong and sharp as claws, and she takes very good care of them. She possesses an actual cat tail, and she vocalizes like a feline (i.e. meowing, growling, purring, etc). She is extremely graceful and athletic like a cat. Also, she has many mannerisms emulating those of felines, the way she moves, behaves and even the way she lounges.
Catra is obviously from a very long lived race, as she joined the Horde as an adult, long before the Great Wars on Eternia were fought. The final act of the Horde on Eternia was to kidnap one of the children of the King, the Princess Adora. Adora was an infant when she was taken by Hordak, and when she came into adulthood, was made Force Captain of the Evil Horde armies. At that time, Catra is shown to be of a similar age in appearance, so it is clear that Catra does not age as fast as humans do.
Sample Journal Entry:
[Catra is lounging on her bed, her copious amounts of long, raven hair spilling over her shoulders. Her tail curls around her thigh, the tip tapping in a slow rythem like cats at rest do.]
Some prison. This is more like a vacation. I even get my own room. If this is how the afterlife is going to be, it’s not so bad.
Now, I keep hearing about this ‘spa’ thing. From how you all talk, it’s clearly a luxury. So, who’s going to give me the tour? I want to know everrrything.
[The last is spoken with a clear, feline purr to it, and she has a sultry, come hither smile on her lips.]
Sample RP:
Men. No matter what universe they came from, they were all the same. Easily distracted. Easily manipulated. The wardens here were even easier. They weren’t as pure as the people of the Rebellion, but that really just made it simpler to trick them. A little affection here, a little misdirection there, and she’d stolen the warden item she had palmed in her hand. She knew she wouldn’t have a lot of time before it was missed, so she was moving as fast as was wise. She didn’t want to attract undue attention.
She opened the door she’d been eyeing for well over a month, at long last, and strode inside. She closed it behind her carefully, and let her eyes take in the whole room. The engine was a lovely thing. Not as advanced as she’d hoped for but that didn’t make a bit of difference to her.
She approached a panel and laid a palm, and then her cheek as well, against it. She could feel the thrum of the mechanical power. Or was it magic that made it move? Well, she’d see wouldn’t she? She purred back at it affectionately. Machines she loved. Machines could never betray. They could only do as they were told.
Lifting her face away from the metal, she absently stroked her hand along it, as if it were a beloved pet. She dug her nails into the seam of a panel and pulled it away, laying the inner workings bare before her. She smiled, slow and wicked.
“Hello, dearie. Let’s you and I get to know each other better, hmm?”
Special Notes:
Back on Etheria, Catra also has two pets. A pink lion named Clawdeen, and a dark purple pegasus named Shadow. These are the only two creatures she has ever shown true affection for.
